Area informationSuizenji Park (3 minute walk) This Momoyama-style park built by the Hosokawa Family is attracts both locals and tourists. Kumamoto Prefectural Office (8 minute walk) Every fall, the rows of Ginkgo trees turn gold; making this open area into a popular gathering spot. Ezu Lake (5 minutes by car) A rarity in urban areas, this lake is created by underground water. It is the symbol of Kumamoto Prefecture. Kumamoto Castle (15 minutes by car) Kumamoto Castle is one of the three major castles in Japan. The castle is well-known for its curving stone walls which, in their time, were considered to be impenetrable. Most of the original buildings and structures were destroyed in a mysterious fire in 1877. The main tower, "Tenshu-kaku" was rebuilt in 1960.
