Area information Places and events of interest:
The Gion Matsuri (Gion Festival), held every year in July, is one of the most famous festivals in Japan. The city is decorated with gorgeous halberds and many festival shops are erected along the main streets and alleys. The sound of traditional festival music played on ancient instuments adds to the festive atmosphere.
Heian Jingu (Heian Shrine):
Heian Shrine was constructed in 1895 to celebrate the 1,100th anniversary of the establishment of the Heian capital. The enshrined deity was Emperor Kanmu, who established the capital city. Today, the shrine is a favorite landmark among the citizens of Kyoto.
The Jidai-Matsuri, one of the three major festivals of Kyoto, is held every year on October 22. Costumed participants parade through the city, providing a glimpse of the fashions and customs from the Heian era to early Meiji days.
Yasaka Jinja (Yasaka Shrine):
Yasaka Shrine is famous for the Gion Festival, held in July, and the Okera Festival held on New Year's Day. More than 3,000 shrines throughout Japan are related to this venerable shrine. Kyoto citizens refer to it as "Gion-san", and visit for exorcism as well as to pray for business prosperity., |
