Area information The town of Bern was founded by Duke Berchthold V von Zähringen in 1191. In 1353, it was the eighth town to join the Swiss Confederation. Bern?s Golden Age in terms of territorial gain and political might were the 14th ? 16th centuries. French troops marched into the city in 1798, and the old Bern ceased to exist. By 1848, Bern was the capital of the Swiss Confederation.
At the same time, Bern is also the regional capital of the Kanton of Bern. Bern has been declared a UNESCO World-Heritage site, because of its well-preserved medieval core. Bern?s 6 km-long ?Lauben? constitute one of Europe?s longest covered shopping-arcades. Thanks to its peninsular nature, this shopping mall is a pedestrian zone, too.
